This isn’t the story of the square-jawed hero who swaggers through impossible odds without a scratch. It’s the story of a beaten-up, broken-down, past-his-best slugger – no offence, Ryan Gosling – who never gives up.
“I think the stuntman’s status as the underdog is just fundamentally interesting,” The Fall Guy director David Leitch told Empire. “That idea of someone who takes hits for a living and realises there is a power and nobility in getting back on your feet every time, I think that speaks to a lot of our lives.”

The original Fall Guy TV show that ran from 1981 to 1986 now looks kinda dated. But despite wobbly sets, low-stakes action and the odd bit of acting that belongs on a cheese board, there was something about Lee Majors’ charismatic interpretation of stuntman-slash-bounty-hunter Colt Seavers that chimed with David Leitch.
Perhaps that’s no surprise, given the director’s own backstory. Before he stepped up to helm hits like Deadpool 2, Leitch took daily beatdowns for two decades on movies including The Matrix and Fight Club, and always knew the stunt world could inspire a great movie. “They’re the ones that really make the magic happen,” he told EW. “I just thought it was time to tell a story from their perspective.”
The Fall Guy plot – What is The Fall Guy about?
Every scar on Colt Seaver’s body tells a story – but if the veteran stuntman isn’t careful, his latest movie might be the final chapter. Having tried to quit Hollywood and been lured back in, Seaver (Gosling) lands on the set of sci-fi epic Metal Storm – much to the fury of the film’s director and Colt’s ex-lover, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt).
But Jody has bigger headaches than an old flame. Metal Storm’s leading man, cocksure action hero Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), has gone missing and when Colt is tasked with retrieving him, he finds that in the real-life underworld, the beatings don’t stop when the director yells ‘Cut’!
Cast of The Fall Guy – Who is playing The Fall Guy?
As portrayed by Majors in the TV show, Colt Seaver was a hard-drinking ladies man. Ryan Gosling’s character is more nuanced, as you’d expect from an actor who can be both tender as a baby deer (think back to La La Land) and hard as nails (remember the notorious head-stomping scene from Drive?).
As Gosling told Variety, cinema’s greatest living director has already given his stamp of approval. “I saw Steven Spielberg walking in my direction. I thought there’s no way he’s coming to talk to me. And yet he kept getting closer. And I stood up and he gave me a hug and said, ‘I just saw Fall Guy and I loved it’.”

The trouble with being a former stuntman, and making a movie about a fictitious one, is that the stunts really need to deliver. Don’t worry, producer Kelly McCormick told journalist Olly Richards – in the age of CGI, the 122-strong stunt team and old-school practical effects on The Fall Guy will blow our minds.
“It was a really special set. We were doing these huge stunts, like a 150-foot fall, which hadn’t happened in about ten years. We did a 250-foot jump over a giant crevasse – I’m not even sure how we achieved that, to be honest. We did a giant cannon roll on a beach – that hadn’t been done since, I think, Casino Royale.”
